i just wanna chill in this blogspace a spell~

i put win98se onto the old thinkpad r40.  the iomega 'clik' and 'zip' disks are working.  i was able to install a version of openoffice that runs well for spreadsheets (r40 being the offline project).  i took a risk in maxing the ram out for win98se.  i had originally maxed it out to 2gb's while it was running linux (antix and slackware) both with fvwm, with my own keybinds for terminal and file manager (my preferred being stterm, but i didn't use that last time (slackware) i think, and thunar for 'files'),

i pushed win98se up to 512megs ram (2 256 chips).  and so far so good i guess, haven't noticed any issues. 

( in linux, i rather keep things simple.  i only add scripts atp for 'gui-wake.sh' and 'gui-unwake.sh' hehe, that i can toggle on/off that way  :).  so the screen won't time out* )

in windows now, i have it capable.  most notable now being that sound works in dos games.  tho only within windows.  like via console (?).  if you restart in dos-mode no sound.  

i am thinking right now, that the problem i was having (getting an os install working on r40) was actually not an issue with the drive i was using.  the drive i had in it before (with linux) was an m.2 sata drive in an pata/ ide adapter enclosure, and that installed into the r40 like a normal laptop ide or whatever.

so yea, like what im thinking(*) is to use that other (m.2) drive and get linux running again on that, and be able to swap between os's and configurations... 

i guess, to note* is that im using in the r40 now an old style spinnie hdd (hard disk drive).  it is 80gb and i think it is kewl as hell, much like the old iomega media solutions.

sound is a snag point i guess with my hardware.  in conferring with friend more capable with ai resources, apparently there are no dos drivers for my sound hardware.  the drivers which are the 'next-to' newest (windows 98) drivers online for the thinkpad r40, allow for dos/sound emulation.

so ai came through, but i'm still not really using it.  not really

i think i'd rather this blog to be in a certain flavour of clarity.  so I'd like to just point out that what i do know about a lot of tech is thx to a "tech" friend, hehe.  ok, and i wanted to speak more about this post's subjects:

i was able to limit the 'max ram' that win98se has access to, like only use 1gb out of 2 gb available. involved a himemx file i think, and editing the config.sys file i believe.  so i swapped my 2 1gb sticks back into the r40, and there were no issues.  oh, and i limited my ram to 512megs, rather than 1gb which apparently 'would work' prolly.

so after that i attempted some more linux setups on 2 alternate drives: a 40gig spinny hdd and the 128gb m.2/ide.

but my attempts have failed so far at this point (tho i have ran antix and slackware successfully on it before :x), and as it happens now, i find win98se to be running well, and my spreadsheets are running very well in the openoffice /calc,  my iomega stuff just works now.  (there was also a bit of an issue getting usb drives (storage/ thumb/ etc) working, but its all working now).

the palm syncing with my vintage or ancient (??) palm pda's works very well so far.

and having some access to dos/ win9x gaming is actually quite awesome, as it is.

if anyone finds the same boat, the file nusb33e.exe helped my usb issue.  i think there's also a '66' variant of that file that likely works too.  ok, then, that's all.

getting my bearings

 it does happen to be retro.  it does happen to be cool.  and it does appear to be useful.  a really old laptop, in offline mode.  plus an old point/shoot digital camera.  old format zip disk and clik physical storage mediums.  slackware linux plus fvwm window manager.  got the last libreoffice version that supports 32bit installed and working, so my spreadsheet systems are operational.

ya know, it's bugging me, but i'd rather just leave this note here than look into it right now (blab):  i think i have since heard the heart is rather on more percentage wise on the right side of the body, and i guess it was misrepresented at some point/periods, as being on left side //"pledge"** 

 guess if u were more curious of that, you could just check in out anatomically via internet.  i have long since gotten a 'grey's anatomy' hardback which i 'at least' used to reference for such things.  one of those books to not declutter i guess (?)

looks like some of the logic i presented is escew.  i'm not sure where i was erring, but it always seemed to work for me before.  but to be fair, i haven't done the internal stuff as presented here, in a while

i think things are being lost in translation, blog vs 'chat.' but i was thinking, and it hit me, i should clarify at least what more is wrong with the visual portrayal in this post.  the green liver and spleen/pancreas are switched/ on the wrong sides.  sorry if that had misled anyone.  hmmmm, i 'think' its still useful post...
